Scholl, William Howard

Scholl, William Howard
▪ 2003

British businessman and shoe designer (b. Sept. 24, 1920, London, Eng.—d. March 15, 2002, Douglas, Isle of Man), developed an orthopedic wooden sandal in the late 1950s, but young women, charmed by the shoe's deceptively simple looks and the distinctive clip-clip sound it made when they walked, turned the Dr. Scholl sandal into a fashion rage in the 1960s and '70s. Scholl, whose physician uncle was the original founder of the company, based his design on a German or Finnish wooden clog. He modified and contoured the sandal to improve the exercise value, added an adjustable leather strap, and began marketing it in 1961 with the slogan “Looking good and doing you good.” Scholl also expanded the Dr. Scholl foot-care product line. He took the family company public in 1971, sold it to Schering-Plough HealthCare Corp. in 1979, and was president of Schering-Plough's International Consumer Products division until retiring in 1984. Scholl was appointed CBE in 1998.
