- Sangster, Robert
-
▪ 2005British businessman and Thoroughbred racehorse owner (b. May 23, 1936, Liverpool, Eng.—d. April 7, 2004, London, Eng.), as chief financier of Coolmore Stud, was one of Europe's most successful racehorse breeders and owners for more than 25 years. Horses racing in Coolmore's distinctive white, emerald green, and royal blue silks won more than two dozen European Classic races, including the Epsom and Irish derbies, the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas races, the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby), and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and Sangster was named Britain's champion owner five times between 1977 and 1984. He initially bankrolled his bloodstock and racing horse purchases with the income from Vernons Pools, the sports betting company founded by his father, but he sold Vernons in 1988 for some £90 million (about $150 million).
