      Kuwaiti journalist and social activist (b. 1936, Ash-Shuwaykh, Kuwait—d. March 20, 2001, Kuwait City, Kuwait), campaigned against official corruption and for woman suffrage in Kuwait. Salem, one of her country's first female teachers and journalists, was a founding member (1964) of the Kuwaiti Literary League, a board member of the Kuwait Journalists Association, owner and editor in chief of Al-Majalis magazine, and the author of several books, notably Women in the Koran. She was assassinated on her way to a conference on women and culture.
