Deti Arbata (
Children of the Arbat, 1988), was finally published in 1987. With
Strakh (1990;
Fear, 1992) and
Prakh i pepel (1996;
Dust and Ashes, 1996), he expanded the novel into an Arbat trilogy (b. Jan. 1 [Jan. 14, New Style], 1911, Chernigov, Ukraine, Russian Empire [now Chernihiv, Ukraine]—d. Dec. 23, 1998, New York, N.Y.).
