Canadian politician and journalist (b. Jan. 26, 1925, Montreal, Que.—d. Feb. 9, 2004, Montreal), led the Liberal Party in Quebec province from 1978 to 1982; a committed federalist, he helped defeat a referendum in 1980 on the proposed secession of the French-speaking province from Canada. Ryan served in the Ministry of Education for two years before joining Le Devoir, an influential Montreal-based newspaper, as editor in 1964. He eventually became the newspaper's publisher as well as a noted columnist before campaigning successfully for the Liberal leadership in 1978. From 1985 until his retirement in 1994, Ryan held a series of posts in the provincial cabinet of Robert Bourassa, his successor as Liberal Party leader.
