Russert studied political science at John Carroll University (B.A., 1972), University Heights, Ohio, before earning a law degree (1976) from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. That same year he worked on the successful U.S. Senate campaign of Daniel Patrick Moynihan; Russert later served as Moynihan's chief of staff. During the New York gubernatorial race of 1982, Russert joined the campaign staff of Mario Cuomo, and he continued to advise Cuomo after his election. Two years later Russert left the political arena to become an executive at the Washington Bureau of NBC, and in 1988 he was made its bureau chief. Russert was the recipient of numerous honours, including an Edward R. Murrow Award (2001) and an Emmy Award (2005). He was also the author of two best-selling books, Big Russ and Me: Father and Son, Lessons of Life (2004) and Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and Sons (2006).
