Runyan, Paul

Runyan, Paul
▪ 2003

American golfer (b. July 12, 1908, Hot Springs, Ark.—d. March 17, 2002, Palm Springs, Calif.), was one of the most accomplished golfers ever at irons play and putting. Runyan won more than 50 tournaments, including the Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) championship in 1934 and 1938. Having turned pro in his teens, Runyan went on to become a highly successful player during the 1930s. His total of nine tournament victories in a single season (1933) was surpassed only by Sam Snead (Snead, Samuel Jackson ) (q.v.), Ben Hogan, and Byron Nelson. Runyan's most notable victory came when he demolished the heavily favoured Snead, closing him out after 29 holes to capture the PGA championship in 1938. Runyan was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1990.
