American politician (b. June 7, 1909, Newark, N.J.—d. May 7, 2005, West Orange, N.J.), steered the 1974 impeachment hearings of Pres. Richard Nixon as chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. Rodino was widely praised for his patient and evenhanded leadership of the politically charged hearings. President Nixon resigned before his impeachment came to a vote before the full House. In his 40 years as a congressman (1949–89), Rodino was known for his advocacy of civil rights and immigration reform and for having introduced the bill that made Columbus Day a national holiday.
