Riesman, David, Jr.
▪ 2003

American sociologist (b. Sept. 22, 1909, Philadelphia, Pa.—d. May 10, 2002, Binghamton, N.Y.), was the author, along with Reuel Denney and Nathan Glazer, of the international best-seller The Lonely Crowd: A Study of the Changing American Character (1950), which analyzed American life by dividing people into “other-directed,” “tradition-directed,” and “inner-directed” character types. The book posited that the direction of a society at a given time was determined by patterns in population growth, which would prompt one of those groups to be dominant.
