▪ 2007
Dorothy Ann Willis
American politician (b. Sept.1, 1933, Lakeview, Texas—d. Sept. 13, 2006, Austin, Texas), served (1991–95) as the feisty governor of Texas and was the first woman to gain the office in her own right. During her tenure Richards, an ardent feminist, appointed a record number of women and minorities to state positions. Before entering politics, she taught school. Richards was elected the Texas treasurer in 1982, the first woman to win a state office in 50 years. In 1988 she gave a memorable keynote address at the National Democratic Convention, wisecracking that George H.W. Bush, the Republican presidential candidate, could not help the way he talked—he was “born with a silver foot in his mouth.” Her administration as governor was marked by a number of reforms, but in her bid for reelection in 1994, she was defeated by George W. Bush.
