Revueltas, Rosaura

      Mexican actress (b. 1910?, Durango, Mex.—d. April 30, 1996, Cuernavaca, Mex.), gave a vibrant performance in the controversial film Salt of the Earth (1954), which was based on a violent mining strike in Silver City, N.M. She portrayed Esperanza Quintero, who was caught up in the struggle for workers' and women's rights. The film was denounced by the House Un-American Activities Committee, and many of the cast and crew were blacklisted. Revueltas was arrested by U.S. immigration agents, charged with illegal entry, and faced deportation to Mexico. Ultimately, the miners union headquarters in Silver City was burned, and the film was officially banned. The illegal-entry case against Revueltas was dropped, and she left the U.S. voluntarily but never acted again. She first studied dancing and acting in Mexico City and in 1946 made her theatrical debut in La deconocida de arras. Revueltas also appeared in a handful of films including Islas Marias and Muchachas de uniforme, both released in 1950. Two years later she had a minor role in the U.S. film Sombrero. After she was blacklisted, Revueltas worked with Bertolt Brecht's Berliner Ensemble from 1957 to 1960.
