      U.S. lawyer who successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), overturning the "separate but equal" doctrine of racial segregation in public schools. He also served as U.S. solicitor general (1956-61) and was appointed counsel to the Warren Commission (1963-64), which investigated the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy (b. July 8, 1907—d. June 26, 1996).
