had a distinguished career as a moderate Conservative public servant, highlighted by appointments as defense secretary (1979–81) and as foreign minister (1982–83) under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. He and Thatcher were not in accord on several issues, however, notably the Falkland Islands War (1982), which he sought to avert through diplomacy, and she removed him from his post at the start of her second term. Pym also served (1973–74) as secretary of state for Northern Ireland. He was first elected to Parliament in 1961 and was made a life peer in 1987.
