      British architect (b. March 15, 1921, Bedford, Eng.—d. May 5, 2003, London, Eng.), with his American-born longtime partner, Hidalgo Moya, designed some of post-World War II Britain's most respected structures. Their commissions included the Skylon “vertical feature” at the 1951 Festival of Britain; the award-winning Bauhaus-influenced Churchill Gardens flats in Pimlico, West London; Wolfson College, Oxford; the Chichester Festival Theatre; and the Museum of London. Powell and Moya were awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1974. Powell was made OBE in 1957, knighted in 1975, and named a Companion of Honour in 1984.
