directed plays ranging from classical Shakespeare to West End musicals as well as opera. Pimlott was staff producer (1976–78) for the English National Opera and went on to direct for Opera North and other companies. As associate director (1987–88) at the Sheffield Crucible, he gained notice for his 1988 staging of Botho Strauss's The Park. He was company director of the Royal Shakespeare Company Stratford in 1996 and associate director in 1996–2002 as well as joint artistic director (2003–05) of the Chichester Festival Theatre. Among his successes were T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral (1993) and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra (1999) for the RSC and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1991) at the Palladium. He was made OBE in 2007.
