▪ 2001American race-car driver (b. March 14, 1914, Level Cross, N.C.—d. April 5, 2000, Greensboro, N.C.), was a three-time National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) Grand National champion, winner of the first Daytona 500, and the patriarch of a stock-car racing dynasty that included his legendary son, Richard. Beginning his racing career in 1949—two years after NASCAR was founded—Petty quickly established himself as one of his sport's early stars. He went on to win a total of 54 NASCAR races, including the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959. He won NASCAR Grand National titles in 1954, 1958, and 1959. After his retirement from professional racing in the early 1960s, he oversaw the family business, Petty Enterprises, which became the winningest team in stock-car racing history.
