▪ 2009Belgian Pop artist and illustratorborn April 6, 1934, Brussels, Belg.died Nov. 17, 2008, Paris, Franceshot to international cult status with the book Rock Dreams (1973), a surrealist compilation of sketches, photographs, paintings, and collages depicting iconic rock musicians such as Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, David Bowie, and the Rolling Stones in fantastical situations, with pithy text provided by his British coauthor, Nik Cohn. Peellaert studied art with the intention of entering the film industry, but after moving to Paris in the 1960s he became enamoured with the Pop art movement and radical new ideas. He collaborated again with Cohn on 20th-Century Dreams (1999) and with American writer Michael Herr on The Big Room (1986). Peellaert also designed record album covers, promotional movie posters, satirical cartoon strips, Christmas cards, and stage set designs.
