      American racehorse owner and businessman (b. April 22, 1922, Clinton, Iowa—d. July 19, 2000, La Jolla, Calif.), owned a number of highly successful racehorses, most notably Cigar, which in 1996 tied legendary racehorse Citation's record of 16 victories in a row. Trained as an aviation mechanic, Paulson founded his own company, Gulfstream Aerospace, in 1978 and turned it into a leading producer of private jets. He began breeding racehorses in the early 1980s. His stable went on to produce 32 Breeders' Cup runners and 8 champions, including Arazi in 1991. Nevertheless, none of Paulson's horses was more successful than Cigar, which was twice voted Horse of the Year (1995–96) and earned more prize money—$9.9 million—than any other racehorse in history.
