      British writer who, although virtually unknown in her homeland, was well respected in the United States for her longtime column in The New Yorker, "Letters from London" (1939-84), which earned immediate acclaim on its debut during World War II; her best-known novel was One Fine Day, 1947 (b. Aug. 25, 1906d. Jan. 22, 1997).
