▪ 2004

British theatre designer (b. Dec. 3, 1914, London, Eng.—d. Feb. 19, 2003, London), was renowned for her visionary stage designs, including the influential thrust stage at Stratford, Ont., and for her fruitful collaboration with director Tyrone Guthrie. Moiseiwitsch's first professional design was in 1934. From 1935 to 1939 she designed for the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, after which she began work for the Oxford Playhouse. In 1944 she began an association with the Old Vic Company; five years later she made her debut design for the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon. In 1953 Guthrie asked her to help him design a theatre for the new Shakespeare Festival in Canada, and the result was the thrust stage in the festival tent; she designed more than 20 shows for the festival. Moiseiwitsch was appointed CBE in 1976.
