McIlkenny, Richard
▪ 2007

Northern Irish-born factory worker (b. Dec. 22, 1933, Belfast, N.Ire.—d. May 21, 2006, Dublin, Ire.), was one of the Birmingham Six, who were wrongly convicted of a 1974 pub bombing in which 21 people died. The case triggered international protests and in 1991 led to the establishment of the U.K. Royal Commission on Criminal Justice. McIlkenny, who called himself a nonviolent sympathizer to the Irish republican cause, was living in Birmingham, Eng., when he was arrested with five other men in November 1974 as they tried to attend the funeral of a suspected Irish Republican Army (IRA) bomber. The six men were convicted of 21 counts of murder and sentenced in 1975 to life in prison, but 16 years later the U.K. Court of Appeal ruled that the men had been beaten into signing false confessions, which were later tampered with. In March 1991 the Birmingham Six were released, and McIlkenny moved with his family to Ireland.
