      British actor in motion pictures, television, and—most notably—the theatre; his versatility was illustrated by his stylish performances in plays by William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, and Harold Pinter; such musicals as She Loves Me and Follies; and his last role, Wilhelm Furtwängler, the Berlin Philharmonic conductor accused of Nazi collaboration, in Taking Sides (b. Oct. 10, 1933, London, Eng.—d. March 25, 1998, London).
