▪ 2002

Bolivian trade union leader and revolutionary politician (b. May 19, 1914, Corocoro, Bol.—d. Aug. 27, 2001, La Paz, Bol.), was the key founder (1946) and longtime leader of the Trade Union Confederation and as such was commander of a workers' uprising that, with its triumph in 1952 and the reforms it brought, began what became known as a “golden decade”; during that decade he served as minister of mines and petroleum (1952–56), senator (1956–60), and vice president (1960–62). Though the government was soon thereafter ousted in a military coup, Lechín remained prominent in Bolivian politics—as the radical opposition—until the mid-1980s.
