▪ 2004
Ioannis Spyridon Latsis
Greek shipping and oil magnate (b. Sept. 14, 1910, Katakolo, Greece—d. April 17, 2003, Athens, Greece), was a bold and surefooted businessman, who became one of the richest men in the world. Working his way up from deckhand to captain, Latsis used his savings to begin buying his own ships and by the 1960s he owned a fleet. In 1969 he established the Greek export-oriented refining company Petrola, and he set up an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia. By the late 1970s he was able to move into banking; he purchased the Banque des Dépots in Geneva and founded the EFG Private Bank and Trust Company in London and the Euroinvestment Bank (now Eurobank) in Athens. In his later years he used his wealth for philanthropic projects. Latsis turned over the running of his businesses to his son in 1999.
