Polish dissident (b. March 3, 1934, Lvov, Pol. [now Lviv, Ukraine]—d. June 17, 2004, Warsaw, Pol.), was the intellectual leader of the Solidarity labour union movement in Poland in the 1980s; he negotiated the end of the communist regime there and served as a crucial adviser to Lech Walesa, Solidarity's chairman and president of Poland (1990–95). Beginning in the 1960s, Kuron organized both student and union protests against the authoritarian Polish government and was imprisoned three times as a result. After a democratic government was formed in 1989, he served as labour minister (1989–90 and 1992–93).
