▪ 2001

American broadcaster and actor (b. Aug. 24, 1912, Covington, Ky.—d. March 15, 2000, Fort Myers, Fla.), parlayed his success as a radio announcer in the 1930s into a long and varied career in television. He first achieved popularity during his broadcasting stints at radio stations in Indianapolis, Ind.; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Chicago before the outbreak of World War II. After serving in the navy during the war, Kirby worked exclusively in television. He was an announcer and a comic performer on The Garry Moore Show, a variety program, in 1950–51, 1958–64, and 1966–67. He also served as a cohost of the popular show Candid Camera from 1961 to 1966. Kirby later took intermittent broadcasting assignments until his retirement from television in 1973.
