      German-born American harpsichordist, teacher, and critic (b. Sept. 27, 1930, Berlin, Ger.—d. Jan. 23, 2002, Redding, Conn.), was perhaps the most eminent harpsichord player of his generation and made more than 80 recordings. He was the son of Alexander Kipnis, a well-known operatic bass. In addition to his mastery of the Baroque literature for his instrument, Kipnis was a great popularizer of the harpsichord, often including jazz and pop tunes in his concerts. At the time of his death, he was preparing for the premiere of a work dedicated to him by composer Philip Glass.
