Khan, Vilayat Hussain
▪ 2005

Indian sitar player and composer (b. Aug. 8, 1928, Gouripur, East Bengal, India [now in Bangladesh]—d. March 13, 2004, Mumbai [Bombay], India), developed a style of playing known as gayaki ang (“vocal style”), in which the sitar is used to mimic the sound of the human voice, and advanced the art of improvisation with his knack for finding the interesting patterns and unusual twists in the ragas he played. Khan was born into a long-standing family of classical musicians, and gave his first public performance at the age of 6. Besides touring and performing internationally, he composed and recorded music for motion pictures, notably the Merchant Ivory film The Guru (1969).
