      American diplomat (b. Feb. 16, 1904, Milwaukee, Wis.—d. March 17, 2005, Princeton, N.J.), defined U.S. foreign policy during the Cold War as principal architect of the “containment policy” against the expansionism of the Soviet Union. He advocated applying counterpressure to Soviet encroachment. This was first detailed in a 5,540-word cable (“The Long Telegram”) issued in 1946 while Kennan was stationed at the U.S. embassy in Moscow and in an article signed only “X” and published in 1947 in Foreign Policy magazine (“The Sources of Soviet Conduct”). He also helped shape the Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Europe following World War II. Kennan was educated at Princeton University and the University of Berlin and worked as a Foreign Service officer from 1926 to 1953. He was a notable memoirist and historian, publishing from his longtime post at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. Kennan undertook brief ambassadorships in Moscow (1952) and Yugoslavia (1961–63) and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1989).
