Jefferts Schori, Katharine
▪ 2007

When Katharine Jefferts Schori was nominated in 2006 to serve as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, she became the first woman to have that distinction. After defeating six men in the election at the church's General Convention in Columbus, Ohio, in June, she became the first woman chosen as a primate in the 400-year history of the Anglican Communion. Hailed by progressives and lamented by conservatives, her election was another signpost in what appeared to be the breakup or realignment of worldwide Anglicanism.

Katharine Jefferts was born on March 26, 1954, in Pensacola, Fla. She was raised as a Roman Catholic and educated by nuns at a convent school until her parents began attending Episcopal services when she was nine. She earned a B.S. (1974) in biology from Stanford University and an M.S. (1977) and a Ph.D. (1983) in oceanography from Oregon State University, where she specialized in the evolution of squids and octopuses of the northeastern Pacific. In 1979 she married Richard Schori, a theoretical mathematician. She was an oceanographer with the National Marine Fisheries Service in Seattle before her ordination (1994) into the priesthood. Jefferts Schori served as assistant rector of the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan in Corvallis, Ore., until her election as bishop of Nevada in 2001. That year she received a D.D. from Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, Calif., where she had received her master's in divinity in 1994. As a licensed pilot, she often flew to visit the 35 congregations in her 6,000-member diocese.

Jefferts Schori was one of the bishops who voted in 2003 to confirm the election of the Rev. V. Gene Robinson as bishop of the diocese of New Hampshire—the first openly gay man to be elected an Anglican bishop. In explaining her vote in a letter to her diocese, she said, “I have long experience of living on the margin, from being a student who was ‘too young' to being a woman in a traditionally male occupation, to being a ‘gringa' trying to do Hispanic ministry.”

At her investiture in Washington, D.C., in November, Jefferts Schori said, “If some in this church feel wounded by recent decisions, then our salvation, our health as a body, is at some hazard, and it becomes the duty of all of us to seek healing and wholeness.”

After defeating six men in the election at the church's General Convention in Columbus, Ohio, in June 2006, she became the first woman chosen as a primate in the 400-year history of the Anglican Communion.
