      Canadian-born American poet, short-story writer, and critic (b. Aug. 19, 1908, Cobourg, Ont.—d. July 9, 2003, Cockeysville, Md.), from 1971 to 1973 served as consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress, a position that in 1986 became poet laureate. Over some 80 years her work, which explored universal themes of human anxieties, love, and hopes, appeared in numerous literary and college quarterlies as well as the New York Times and The New Yorker.
