Iwaki, Hiroyuki
▪ 2007

Japanese conductor (b. Sept. 6, 1932, Tokyo, Japan—d. June 13, 2006, Tokyo), was the energetic chief conductor (1974–89) of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and was appointed its first conductor laureate in 1990. Iwaki made his conducting debut in 1956 in Tokyo with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and was given the title permanent conductor in 1969. In Japan he established the country's only permanent professional chamber group, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa. Besides serving as guest conductor at numerous major orchestras, including those in Berlin and Vienna, he conducted the sound tracks for Akiro Kurosawa's film Ran (1985) and for the movie Rising Sun (1993). He was made an honorary officer of the Order of Australia for his efforts to promote Australian-Japanese relations. Despite some 30 surgical operations and two bouts with cancer, he continued to conduct the MSO, albeit from a wheelchair.
