Hughes, Emlyn Walter

      British association football (soccer) player (b. Aug. 28, 1947, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, Eng.—d. Nov. 9, 2004, Sheffield, Eng.), was one of England's finest footballers of the 1970s; during 12 years (1967–79) with Liverpool, the exuberant left-half known as “Crazy Horse” led that club to the Football Association Cup (1974), four league championships (1973, 1976–77, 1979), two Union des Associations Européennes de Football Cups (1973, 1976), and two European Cups (1977–78). He was named Player of the Year in 1977. In 1979 he transferred to Wolverhampton, which he took to the League Cup title the next season. Hughes also played 62 international matches for England, 23 as captain. After retiring he went into broadcasting, notably on the BBC television quiz show A Question of Sport. He was made OBE in 1980.
