      Swiss lawyer and sports administrator (b. Oct. 26, 1918, Bern, Switz.—d. Oct. 18, 2006, Bern), blew the whistle in 1998 on Olympic officials from Salt Lake City, Utah, and other cities for alleged bribery, vote buying, and other forbidden activities; his public allegations triggered an international corruption scandal that forced the expulsion or resignation of 10 members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and of several organizers of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games. After an injury (1938) ended Hodler's career on the Swiss national ski team, he became a coach (1939–48) and president (1951–98) of the International Ski Federation. He was responsible for establishing the rules for the 1948 Winter Games in St. Moritz, and he later served as an IOC vice president (1993–97) and chairman (1988–2002) of the IOC's finance commission. An avid bridge player, Hodler also was president (1952–88) of the Swiss Bridge Federation.
