Hinton, William Howard

Hinton, William Howard
▪ 2005

American agronomist (b. Feb. 2, 1919, Chicago, Ill.—d. May 15, 2004, Concord, Mass.), authored Fanshen: A Documentary of Revolution in a Chinese Village (1966) and Shenfan: The Continuing Revolution in a Chinese Village (1983), two studies that chronicled the impact of the Maoist revolution on a peasant village. Hinton spent six years in China documenting the turning over of the landlords' land to the peasants as dictated by Mao Zedong's communist revolution. When Hinton returned to the U.S., however, his notes were confiscated; though he eventually retrieved them after five years, the publication of his book was delayed another eight years when he was suspected of treason during the Joseph McCarthy era.
