Baron Hill-Norton of South Nutfield 
      British naval officer (b. Feb. 8, 1915, Germiston, S.Af.—d. May 16, 2004, Studland, Dorset, Eng.), rose through the military ranks to become chief of defense staff (Britain's most senior serving officer) with the title admiral of the fleet in April 1971. Hill-Norton joined the Royal Navy as a cadet at age 13. By 1962 he had received his rear admiral's flag as assistant chief of naval staff. He was promoted to vice admiral in 1965 and second sea lord in 1967. A strict disciplinarian, Hill-Norton abolished the Royal Navy's traditional daily nip of rum in 1970. From 1974 to 1977 he was chairman of NATO's military committee. Granted a life peerage in 1979, he became an active member of the House of Lords.
