      Polish-born writer (b. May 20, 1919, Kielce, Pol.—d. July 4, 2000, Naples, Italy), wrote novels, short stories, diaries, and critical essays but was best known for Inny Swiat (1953; first published in London in English as A World Apart in 1951), a stirring memoir of the time he spent as a prisoner in a Soviet labour camp during 1940–42. Herling-Grudzinski, who also published under the name Gustaw Herling, went into self-exile after World War II and later cofounded Kultura, a Polish-language cultural periodical for Polish émigrés.
