      American basketball coach (b. July 19, 1923, Los Angeles, Calif.—d. Jan. 18, 2002, San Diego, Calif.), was the first coach to win championships in both the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the American Basketball Association (ABA); he was also one of only two coaches ever to win NBA titles with two different teams. Hannum played professional basketball from 1948 to 1957. He then became the head coach of the St. Louis Hawks of the NBA and led the team to triumph over the Boston Celtics to claim the 1958 NBA championship. Hannum later led the Philadelphia 76ers to an NBA title in 1967; that 76ers team, which included such stellar players as Wilt Chamberlain, Hal Greer, Billy Cunningham, and Chet Walker, was widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in NBA history. Hannum also coached the Oakland Oaks to an ABA title in 1968. He retired in 1974. During his career Hannum coached a total of 12 players who went on to earn spots in the Basketball Hall of Fame, Springfield, Mass. Hannum himself was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1998.
