Guggenheim, Charles Eli

      American film producer and director (b. March 31, 1924, Cincinnati, Ohio—d. Oct. 9, 2002, Washington, D.C.), made more than 100 documentaries during a half-century-long career. He was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won 4—for Nine from Little Rock (1964), Robert Kennedy Remembered (1968), The Johnstown Flood (1989), and A Time for Justice (1994). Guggenheim was also one of the pioneers of the political campaign commercials aired on television, and he made official film biographies of Presidents Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson for their libraries.
