built the first experimental fully transistorized computer,
which was introduced in 1953 while he was a research student at the University of Manchester.
He later collaborated on the first commercial transistor computer,
contributed to the development of read-
only memory (
ROM),
and developed digital graphics applications that eventually were used to create special effects in films and video games.
Grimsdale graduated (
1950)
from Manchester and remained there until 1960,
when he temporarily quit academia for industry.
He joined the electrical engineering faculty at Sussex University in 1967.
