      British electrical engineer (b. Sept. 18, 1929, Australia—d. Dec. 6, 2005, Brighton, Eng.), built the first experimental fully transistorized computer, which was introduced in 1953 while he was a research student at the University of Manchester. He later collaborated on the first commercial transistor computer, contributed to the development of read-only memory (ROM), and developed digital graphics applications that eventually were used to create special effects in films and video games. Grimsdale graduated (1950) from Manchester and remained there until 1960, when he temporarily quit academia for industry. He joined the electrical engineering faculty at Sussex University in 1967.
