staged some 250 opera productions, most notably a record 57 world premieres. He was most closely associated with composer Benjamin Britten, with whom he collaborated from 1953 until Britten's death in 1976. Graham served as director of productions (1963–79) of Britten's English Opera Group (later the English Music Theatre) as well as artistic director (1969–89) of the company's annual Aldeburgh Festival. He was also associate director (1967–75) and director (1977–84) of productions for Sadler's Wells Opera (later the English National Opera). In 1979 he joined the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, where he was named artistic director in 1985. Graham was made OBE in 2001.
