      Greek army officer who briefly served as the figurehead president of Greece after a military coup in 1973 overthrew the junta led by Pres. Georgios Papadopoulos (Papadopoulos, Giorgios ) (q.v.); within months Gizikis, recognizing the need for a return to civilian rule, recalled several former politicians from exile and turned over power to a new democratic coalition (b. June 16, 1917, Volos, Greece—d. July 27, 1999, Athens, Greece).
