Georgiadis, Nicholas

      Greek-born stage designer, artist, and teacher (b. Sept. 14, 1923, Athens, Greece—d. March 10, 2001, London, Eng.), applied his training in both painting and architecture to the evocative, atmospheric sets and costumes he devised for theatre and ballet. Although Georgiadis created designs for Rudolf Nureyev and many others, he was most closely associated with Sir Kenneth MacMillan, with whom he collaborated on a dozen major ballets between 1955 and MacMillan's death in 1992. Georgiadis also taught stage design at London's Slade School of Fine Art and cofounded (1971) the Society of British Theatre Designers. He was the first designer to receive (1982) the Evening Standard award for outstanding achievement in ballet. Georgiadis was made CBE in 1984 and was admitted to the Greek Academy of Arts in 1999.
