- Foran, Thomas Aquinas
-
▪ 2001American lawyer (b. Jan. 11, 1924, Chicago, Ill.—d. Aug. 6, 2000, Lake Forest, Ill.), served as the combative chief prosecutor in the sensational case of the “Chicago Seven,” a group of prominent radicals—Lee Weiner, David Dellinger, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, John Froines, Rennie Davis, and Abbie Hoffman—who were charged with crossing state lines with intent to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic national convention in Chicago. Though Foran won convictions against five of the defendants, they never served prison time; an appeals court overturned the convictions. Foran, a 1950 graduate of the University of Detroit School of Law, was a founder in 1957 of the Chicago law firm Foran & Schultz and was the tenacious prosecutor of more than 150 organized crime figures.
