Firth, Sir Raymond William

Firth, Sir Raymond William
▪ 2003

New Zealand-born anthropologist (b. March 25, 1901, Auckland, N.Z.—d. Feb. 22, 2002, London, Eng.), applied his early education in economics in Auckland and at the London School of Economics (LSE), as well as his belief in rigorous scientific observation, to social anthropological research. Firth's first book, Primitive Economics of the New Zealand Maori (1929), was based on his study of the aboriginal people in his native New Zealand. He later wrote on subjects ranging from the economy of Malay fishermen to kinship patterns in Britain and the U.S.; he often collaborated with his wife, anthropologist Rosemary Upcott. Firth's most extensive and lasting field work was on the tiny Polynesian island of Tikopia, an atoll in the Solomon Islands he visited frequently from 1929. He wrote nine books on the people of Tikopia, beginning with We, the Tikopia (1936). Firth began studying at the LSE in 1924 and taught there from 1932 until 1968. He was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 1949 and served as secretary (1946–51), chairman (1958–61), and life president (from 1975) of the Association of Social Anthropologists. Firth was knighted in 1973 and made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001.
