American jazz bassist (b. Aug. 22, 1927, Lexington, Miss.—d. Jan. 30, 2004, Chicago, Ill.), was devoted to a rich,
pure, unamplified sound as he played swinging accompaniments and dense, extended solos; he painted his face in ceremonial designs and wore traditional costumes from Africa when he performed. For 38 years, from 1966, he played in the Art Ensemble (
later,
Art Ensemble of Chicago), a flamboyant, innovative free-jazz group that joined blues,
bop,
abstraction, African and classical music, and colourful percussion; his earthy bass lines were the unifying element in the Art Ensemble's explorations; he also recorded with such free-jazz masters as Muhal Richard Abrams, Archie Shepp, and the Ritual Trio and led his own groups.
