      Scottish journalist who served as editor of the Daily Record from 1946 to 1955 and of the Scotsman from 1956 to 1972 and turned the latter paper from dull to lively and vital; he was also active in the arts and public affairs and in 1972 became an oil industry executive (b. Dec. 26, 1908, Kilmacolm, Scot.—d. Sept. 2, 1998, Edinburgh, Scot.).
