“Paddy” 
      Northern Irish trade unionist and political activist who was interned (1942–45) by the British for his involvement in the Irish Republican Army, but he renounced violence, cofounded (1970) the moderate Social Democratic and Labour Party, and served as minister of health and social services in the short-lived power-sharing executive of 1973–74. Devlin later worked as a journalist and playwright (b. March 8, 1925, Belfast, N.Ire.—d. Aug. 15, 1999, Belfast).
