wrote (1973–2003) an avidly read column for the Daily Mail in which he chronicled the personal lives, peccadilloes, and misfortunes of celebrities and the aristocracy. Among his scoops were the impending breakup of rock star Mick Jagger and his fashion-model wife, Jerry Hall, the engagement of Prince Andrew to Sarah Ferguson, and the 1976 resignation of Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Dempster joined the staff of the Daily Express in 1963 and moved to the Daily Mail in 1971. He also contributed (1969–85) to the “Grovel” column of the satiric magazine Private Eye.
