Clements, Vassar

Clements, Vassar
▪ 2006

American fiddler (b. April 25, 1928, Kinards, S.C.—d. Aug. 16, 2005, Nashville, Tenn.), taught himself to play at age seven and became one of the most versatile and sought-after stage and studio artists on the bluegrass and country music circuits. While working most of his life in nonmusical jobs to support himself, Clements mastered six stringed instruments besides the violin. He played with equal zest and success with stars of bluegrass (including Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, and Ricky Skaggs), rock (Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead, and Paul McCartney), and jazz/blues (Stéphane Grappelli, Dave Holland, and Charlie Musselwhite). Clements, whose versatility was showcased on more than 2,000 albums, was nominated for five Grammy Awards, and he won one in 2005.
